Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
